At « Carrefour des Arts » on Canal Académie, we already devoted a program to this subject, mainly through the Renaissance artists (listen to our broadcast in French : Nativité et adoration des mages).
We now concentrate our attention on the Masters of the seventeenth century, thanks to the presentation by Mrs. Marie-Anne Dupuy-Vachey, art historian and specialist of the seventeenth century.
Is there a link, a common spirit between all these masters of the XVIIth century ?
For Marie-Anne Dupuy-Vachey, this period is mainly related to the Counter-Reform. A spiritual movement that created a more emotional style, contemplative and internalised than the Renaissance style, the approach of which was more intellectual.
Mrs. Dupuy-Vachey selected for us some of the most important masters of the seventeenth century who immortalized the wonders and the miracle of the Nativity and the Adoration of the Kings through the brush of painters such as :
CARAVAGGIO (Michelangelo Merisi, Milano 1571-1610 Porto Ercole)
The Adoration of the Shepherds, Museo Nazionale, Messina, Sicily
Orazio GENTILESCHI (Pisa1563-London 1639)
Rest during the Flight into Egypt (Repos pendant la fuite en Egypte, Vienna KHM)
RUBENS (1577-1640), The Adoration of the Kings, at the Louvre
In the city of Rouen, we can admire another Nativity by Laurent de La HYRE (1606-1656) at the Fine-Arts Museum
Mathieu Le NAIN, The Adoration of the Shepherds, London, National Gallery
We stop at the Spanish master ZURBARAN (1598-1664), Adoration of the Sheperds (1638), and the Adoration of the Kings (1639), Fine Arts Museum of Grenoble
Philippe de CHAMPAIGNE (1602-1674) by whom we find a Nativity at the Fikna Arts Museum of Lille and an Adoration of the Sheperds at the Cathedral of Rouen
Georges de LA TOUR (1593-Lunéville 1652), The Adoration of the Shepherds at the Louvre, and The New Born (Le Nouveau Né) at the Fine Arts Museum, Rennes.
